Patrick Mahomes makes quip about potential final matchup against Tom Brady

Could this be the last time we see Patrick Mahomes face Tom Brady?

That wasn’t the case after they played in 2019, nor 2020. Same with 2021. Thus, Mahomes is taking the “fool me once” approach.

Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will host Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week on Sunday Night Football. Since Mahomes broke into the league, his matchups with Brady have always been a must-watch, and that will remain the case as the pair of 2-1 teams clash in primetime.

And while this isn’t the first time we’ve done this drill, it is possible that this is the last time Brady and Mahomes face one another. Asked during his weekly appearance on “The Drive” if he’s allowed himself to think about that, Mahomes said he didn’t – and for good reason.

“I haven’t allowed myself (to think about that). I think I’ve had a couple games already now that it’s been the last time I might be able to go up against Brady,” Mahomes quipped. “He’s a guy that it seems like he always comes back and plays another season, and he always plays at a high level.

“You just go about knowing they have the GOAT on that side of the football field, and that he always gives them a chance to win. And this is a stout defense that we’re going to have to go up against, and I know I’m going to have to do my best in order to put points up on the board”

It’s understandable that Mahomes isn’t allowing himself to think that way, but this season it has felt more likely than any ever before that this might be Brady’s swan song. And with the two players in different conferences, the only potential rematch this season would have to be in the Super Bowl.
