Mets fans cannot even tune into the All-Star Game without getting a dose of concerning news.
Right as Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic was about to begin, the Mets issued a news dump to reporters that Jacob deGrom was experiencing “mild muscle soreness around his shoulder” on Sunday and that his simulated game he was supposed to pitch on Tuesday was pushed back to Thursday.
DeGrom played catch Monday and Tuesday but the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution.”
The two-time Cy Young Award winner has yet to pitch this season as he recovers from a stress fracture in his right scapula that has sidelined him since spring training.
He had made three rehab starts in recent weeks, throwing 42 pitches and hitting triple digits with Triple-A Syracuse last Thursday.
The hope was that deGrom could return following the All-Star break, but now — depending how things go on Thursday — there is the possibility he may not be ready to go until August.
DeGrom has had his fair share of injury problems over the last two years, so any sort of setback, no matter how minor, is certainly brow-raising in the very least.
But Mets fans will have to wait and see how things go on Thursday before they can breathe a sigh of relief.
