Mike D'Antonio is the front runner to become the next head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
According to Pompey, "A league source said the job could be D’Antoni’s to lose. The source said the 69-year-old would have to bomb his interview with the Sixers owners not to be offered the job, and said D’Antoni is the candidate they want. A team source denied that, saying the ownership won’t know who it wants until candidates are interviewed."
The Sixers are also expected to interview Billy Donovan and Tyronn Lue this week to replace Brett Brown, who was fired on August 24th.
D'Antonio, 69, was the Sixers' associate head coach for half of the season in 2015-16, before he accepted the role to be the Rockets' head coach in June of 2016.
In four years with the Rockets, D’Antoni had a 217-102 record – the highest winning percentage in the Western Conference during that time. He reached the Western Conference Finals once and semifinals three teams in that span as well, but often failed to get past the Golden State Warriors.
His 28 playoff victories with the Rockets is also the fourth-most in the last four years, trailing the Warriors (46), Boston Celtics (33) and Toronto Raptors (31).
