It's no secret that the New York Jets will likely be in the market for a veteran quarterback coming off a season in which second-year signal-caller Zach Wilson was benched amid his epic struggles.
However, it remains unclear exactly which quarterbacks team brass has in its sights.
But according to a new report, the Jets' search will boil down to three prominent names believed to be on the market.
The "names to watch," according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, are Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr, and Jimmy Garoppolo.
Rodgers is still under contract with the Packers, but recent reports have indicated they may be seeking a mutually parting of ways. The Raiders meanwhile signaled their intent to move on from Carr by benching him for the team's final two games. He could be traded, or ultimately released if a deal doesn't materialize. Garoppolo, meanwhile, is a free agent.
Meanwhile, the Jets plan to retain Wilson, according to Howe.
Their hope is that Wilson can still develop after serving as backup for a year or so to a veteran.
Howe's list of potential targets for the Jets isn't especially surprising, given they are arguably the most prominent names being mentioned in the rumor mill.
But, the cost of acquiring each one varies fairly significantly, with Rodgers presumably commanding the most, perhaps as much as one or more first-round draft picks. The haul for Carr would likely be the next costly option, but if he is cut, then the team that signs him will only be spending cash, though he figures to command a decent salary.
The Jets finished 7-10 last season, and were widely regarded to boast a playoff-caliber team -- except at the most important position on the field.
If they can acquire a competent quarterback, they should be a factor in the postseason race for next season.
