New England’s impressive offseason is about to continue, this time with the team retaining one of its own key free agents.

According to ESPN, the Patriots are on course to re-sign veteran pass-catching running back James White.

There had been speculation and reports that White might test the free agent market and might even make sense for teams like the Bucs or Dolphins, but apparently the veteran New England team leader will be staying put as part of the Patriots rebuilt roster.

The 29-year-old White originally joined the Patriots as a fourth-round pick out of Wisconsin in 2014. Over the years he’s developed into one of the most productive pass catchers at the running back position in all of football.

White had a relative down season in 2020 for a variety of reasons, but still hauled in 49 passes for the new-look and somewhat limited New England passing attack. The veteran has 25 career touchdown receptions and caught a career-high 87 passes in 2018.

A return to the Patriots would not only add depth to the passing game moving forward that now includes impressive tight ends Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, but would also retain one of the team’s most respected leaders in the locker room.
