After much speculation, the Jimmy Garoppolo rumor mill was put to rest, for now, on Monday when it was reported he was remaining with the San Francisco 49ers as a backup on a restructured contract.
The move gives the 49ers a reliable insurance policy if Trey Lance either gets hurt or does not work out and also gives the team an asset at the trade deadline should a team be in need of a quarterback.
But there are some questions — Garoppolo essentially sat out all of preseason and has not been attending team meetings, leaving many to wonder just how invested he is in being with the team.
There is also the fact that it puts added pressure on Lance to find success immediately or the whispers that Garoppolo should start will begin to grow.
Yet, there was no real trade market for Garoppolo and having a quality backup is a luxury, especially for a Super Bowl contender, so it makes sense from a team standpoint.
Nonetheless, the move garnered a strong reaction from media folks and fans on social media, with a mixed bag of reviews on whether it made sense or not.
