A prominent photojournalist who captured some of New York City's top sports moments has died of coronavirus, according to the newspaper he worked for.

Anthony Causi, a 48-year-old sports photographer for the New York Post, died Sunday at a Long Island hospital, the outlet reported.

“Anthony Causi was our colleague, our friend, and a brilliant journalist,” said editor-in-chief Stephen Lynch. “He was, quite simply, one of the best sports photographers in New York City, capturing all the major moments of the past 25 years. Soft-spoken, funny, but most of all kind — he was respected by those he photographed and admired by those with whom he worked."

Causi, a Brooklyn native, photographed the teams in his native New York throughout a career that started with the Post in 1994, the newspaper said, and won the respect of his coworkers, players, and readers along the way.

Countless pro leagues, teams, and athletes expressed shock and offered condolences.

“New York baseball won’t be the same without him in the photo pit,” former Yankees and Mets outfielder Cutis Granderson said on Twitter.

Todd Frazier, also a former Yankee and Met now with the Texas Rangers, also weighed in.

“What a great man. So sorry to hear,” Frazier said. “God found his angel photographer, that’s for sure.”

The Mets, Yankees, Knicks, Giants and Red Bulls also made statements, the story said.

Causi is survived by his wife, two young children, parents and two sisters, the Post reported. A GoFundMe was set up in his name for this family.
