Patrick Mahomes addresses sideline dispute, admits 'great decision' was made

It’s little surprise that Patrick Mahomes was resistant to leaving Saturday’s game, but he knows the right decision was made.

During the second quarter of the Chiefs’ AFC Divisional Round win over the Jaguars, Andy Reid was imploring Mahomes to go to the locker room and get his ankle checked out. Mahomes was clearly resistant, but eventually went to the room begrudgingly after a heated interaction.

Chad Henne took over and led a touchdown drive, and by the second half Mahomes was back on the field. He might not be 100 percent, but he’ll play Sunday in the AFC Championship against the Bengals.

So, things ended up shaking out fairly well from Mahomes. He acknowledged Wednesday in his weekly appearance on “The Drive” that the right decision was made.

“Yeah, I mean you look at it now and it was a great decision on his part," Mahomes said. "Like you said, very similar to Tony Pollard’s injury and he had the fracture, that’s what they were looking to make sure I didn’t have. Obviously, the competitor in me, in the playoffs you want to stay in there and play and not let your team down, in a sense.

“I was able to get back there and get the X-rays done and then Chad Henne leads a great drive and scores a touchdown. That’s a special type of team that we have and Chad is a special type of player that he’s able to do that in that situation and that moment.”

Mahomes historically has been a durable player, so getting pulled into the locker room mid-game for an injury evaluation is not something he’s experienced often.

“That was the first time I’ve ever been in that position where I’ve had to go back to the locker room and come back into the game. When you get into the locker room, you're scared because you have to get the X-rays. Obviously, I didn’t think I had broken anything, but you never know, so getting the X-rays and seeing that type of stuff there was definitely scary, but when they told me it was negative and I was good to go I was excited.

“You get back out there and Chad was driving us down the field and I was able to watch that and be excited with my teammates and then in the second half get back into the game.
