The Chiefs played a chunk of last week’s Divisional Round game without franchise savior Patrick Mahomes, who was lost to a third-quarter concussion after absorbing a monster hit from Browns linebacker Mack Wilson. Kansas City survived that setback, though the possibility of scarcely-used backup Chad Henne having to repeat that feat against a Buffalo team riding an eight-game winning streak was concerning to say the least.
Luckily Chiefs fans can erase that thought from their minds, as Mahomes will be under center for Sunday’s AFC title game at Arrowhead Stadium, the result of him clearing the league’s concussion protocol.
This was the expected outcome for Mahomes, who participated in each of Kansas City’s practice sessions this week. The reigning Super Bowl MVP displayed his usual dominance when these teams met in Week 6, pillaging the Bills for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns (both to tight end Travis Kelce) in a 26-17 Chiefs victory. The 25-year-old is also battling a toe injury that could affect his mobility, but even a hobbled Mahomes is better than most.
The Chiefs, winners of 24 of their last 26 dating back to last season, currently stand as three-point favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook, though that line could quickly move in Kansas City’s direction now that Mahomes has been given the green light. Kickoff is set for 6:40 PM ET Sunday night with Jim Nantz and Tony Romo on the call for CBS. Sunday will mark Buffalo’s first conference championship appearance since 1993. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are hosting the AFC title game for a third consecutive season.
