You can get lulled to sleep by the amount of statistics that attempt to put Patrick Mahomes' greatness in perspective, but here's a simple one that will probably still impress you: The 25-year-old has never lost an NFL game that he's started in the month of September.
The former NFL MVP tossed three touchdown passes Sunday and ran for another, helping the Chiefs to a comeback victory over the Cleveland Browns. With the 33-29 win in Week 1, Mahomes is now 11-0 in games that he's started in September. Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports noted that Mahomes has thrown 35 touchdowns to zero interceptions in the month of September, which is staggering production even for Mahomes.
Of course, Mahomes didn't play for much of his rookie season, with Alex Smith starting for the Chiefs in what essentially turned into a redshirt season for the future Super Bowl MVP. But even in 2017, the Chiefs went 3-0 in September. So not only have the Chiefs not lost a September game that Mahomes started, they haven't lost a game in September since he was selected with the No. 10 overall pick in the the 2017 NFL Draft.
Mahomes and the Chiefs will almost certainly be favorites for the rest of September, though they'll have their work cut out with a difficult schedule. Kansas City will play on Sunday Night Football at Baltimore in Week 2. They'll host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3 and travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4, with both of those opponents off to 1-0 starts.
