If the Kansas City Chiefs are going to right the ship on the 2021 season, Patrick Mahomes knows it must start with him.
The Chiefs star quarterback addressed his teammates this week and shouldered the blame for the team’s recent offensive woes.
“You can just watch the tape and know that I need to play better in order to have success,” Mahomes said on Thursday, per ESPN. “There were plays where guys were open. There were plays where we had matchups down the field that I didn’t hit that I usually would give those guys opportunities to make plays.
“I’ve said something to them that I’ve got to be better. At the same time, they have that mindset that they’re going to try and build me up. It’s a thing where you’re not going to play your best game every single game, and that’s when you have to rely on your other guys to kind of step up and make plays for you.”

Mahomes is coming off the worst statistical game of his career on Sunday, where the Chiefs were routed in a 27-3 loss.
Mahomes threw for a season-low 206 yards and an interception, completing just 57% off his pass attempts and was sacked four times.
The interception he threw was his ninth of the season, which is tied for the league lead with Jets rookie Zach Wilson.
“It’s just stuff that I’ve always got to work on, and I kind of lose sometimes during the season and have to get better with,” Mahomes said of Sunday’s performance. “It’s hanging in the pocket, working on my footwork, staying on time, all that stuff like that. … Whenever we don’t’ get going as an offense, it’s usually because I’m doing little things like that.”
The Chiefs, who are 3-4 heading into Week 8, will look to turn things around in primetime on Monday night when they welcome a banged-up, 2-5 Giants team into Arrowhead.
