Mets slugger Pete Alonso might want to consider sliding feet-first.
The Polar Bear gave Mets fans -- and SNY announcer Keith Hernandez -- a minor scare on Monday night when he belly-flopped on a decidedly awkward headlong dive into home plate during the Mets' win over the Padres in San Diego.
"He's gonna kill himself," Hernandez cautioned after the near face-plant. "Pete, come on. Be careful, be careful."
Alonso scored on the play, a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of J.D. Davis. And much to the relief of Mets fans, Alonso appeared to bounce up to his feet no worse for the wear.
But not only was Alonso's slide notably ungraceful, the decision to slide in the first place was a poor one, as Padres center fielder Trent Grisham's relay throw went to third base, meaning there was no play at home plate on Alonso.
Thankfully, Alonso was fine, and as always social media was ready to have some fun with the episode.
