One day after falling victim to a bizarre eighth-inning collapse at the hands of the Yankees, the Red Sox executed a late-inning, out-of-nowhere resurgence of their own.
The Red Sox entered the eighth inning not claiming a single hit against Yankees starter Domingo German, trailing by four runs. One half-inning later, the Sox carried a one-run lead into the ninth, paving the way for a 5-4 win over New York in the series finale.
Here is how the Red Sox ultimately got to German:
- Alex Verdugo broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff double.
- Hunter Renfroe followed with a another double, driving in the Sox' first run.
- Christian Vazquez singled, scoring Renfroe.
- Franchy Cordero singled.
- Kiké Hernandez scored Vazquez on a double.
- Kevin Plawecki, pinch-hitting for Jarren Duran, tied the game with a ground out.
- And, finally, Xander Bogaerts' fly out to right field allowed for Hernandez to race home with the eventual game-winner.
