The Philadelphia Eagles were one of the best teams in the NFL through most of the regular season last year. They started 5-0 and 10-1 before losing six of their last seven games, including a Wild Card round exit in the playoffs.
Former NFL coach Rex Ryan gave his thoughts on the Eagles while appearing on Audacy Sports’ “The Bret Boone Podcast” this week.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team that absolutely showed that they hated their coaches more than the Philadelphia Eagles did last year,” Ryan said. “They were [10-1] at some point and then they couldn’t beat anybody. They were the worst team in the league to close out the season, with outstanding players.”
The Eagles ran out of gas in the second half of the season, which Ryan says is a sign of something being off within the organization.
“So what happened is there’s something in that building, the chemistry was totally off. They got rid of the coordinator, they changed him twice,” he continued. “They got a new guy in there, Vic Fangio, who worked under me, and is a good coach.”
Sirianni led the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance in his second year as head coach, but things appeared to turn sour last season. This could be a make-or-break season for Sirianni and the Birds.
“But at the end of the day, if this thing doesn’t go well in Philly – yes, I think they’re going to be tremendous – but if things start to head south on them, watch what happens,” Ryan said. “We’re going to find out what they think of that coach if things head south. To me, judging by what happened last year, that’s not a good thing.”
