Ryan Fitzpatrick is not quite ready to hand em up just yet.
The 38-year-old journeyman quarterback said on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday that he hopes to still be playing in the 2021 season – which is shaping up to potentially be a quarterback carousel across the league.
“This offseason, we already saw it with [Jared] Goff and [Matthew] Stafford obviously,” he said. “Who knows what’s going to happen with Deshaun [Watson]. There’s rumors everywhere in the quarterback market, but there are a lot of tams looking for a new quarterback or new quarterbacks. For me, personally, I have to take every offseason and reassess. These last two years have really re-lit that fire under me and I still want to play and I enjoy being out there playing.”
Fitzpatrick was benched for rookie Tua Tagovailoa after Week 6 this year, but the Alabama product was inconsistent at times and was also dealing with a thumb injury that allowed the veteran to step back onto the field in Weeks 11, 12 and led the Dolphins to a win off the bench in Week 16.
There was a chance he would have started in Week 17 with an opportunity to send the Dolphins to the playoffs, but he tested positive for COVID-19 and Tagovailoa got the start.
The Dolphins lost the game to the Bills, 10-6.
Where Fitzpatrick could land is anyone’s guess. When asked if he would play for the Patriots, a team Stafford reportedly requested not to be traded to, Fitzpatrick joked that he “can’t be as picky as Matt Stafford.”
They are the only AFC East team he has not played for, so who knows?
