Sam Darnold of New York Jets Out With Sudden Foot Injury

NEW YORK (WFAN.com) -- Much has been made about the recent struggles of New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. The rookie leads the league with 14 interceptions, including four in Sunday's loss to the Miami Dolphins.

The Jets look to avoid losing their fourth game in a row when they face the Buffalo Bills this Sunday. They will have to do so without Darnold, but not, apparently, because he is being benched for poor play.

The No. 3 overall pick was surprisingly wearing a boot on his right foot at the start of practice Wednesday. Darnold is being listed as day-to-day due to a foot strain, Jets head coach Todd Bowles said. According to a source of WFAN's Brian Costello, the injury will cause Darnold to miss Sunday's game.

There is a lot of uncertainty here, and the true extent of the 21-year-old's injury is unknown. On Monday, Darnold had said, "I feel fine. Some bumps and some bruises, but everything is good."

Bowles said Monday that Darnold had not expressed to him that he was "dinged up."

"I didn't know he was dinged at the time, but the injury report will be out Wednesday," Bowles said at the time.

The Jets insisted on Wednesday that Darnold's status for the game was still up in the air. Bowles said New York Giants castoff Davis Webb could start if Darnold is unavailable. Veteran backup Josh McCown, 39, is also an option.

After facing the Bills this weekend, the Jets have their bye in Week 11. Week 12 sees the Jets welcome the New England Patriots to MetLife Stadium.

The Jets may choose to be cautious with Darnold for the rest of the season, even if his ailment is something minor. At 3-6, the team does not have much hope left of reaching the playoffs.
