Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry, who was in town to unveil a new, refurbished court at a local Boys & Girls Club (recording artist Snoop Dogg joined in the festivities), made his way to Chavez Ravine for Tuesday night’s game between the Dodgers and visiting Minnesota Twins. With the Dodgers holding a comfortable five-run advantage in the eighth inning, Curry decided he’d seen enough, content to listen to the rest of the game on his car radio.
However, just as he was getting up to leave, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts went to his bench, inserting Trayce Thompson as a pinch-hitter for Mookie Betts. Curry’s ears immediately perked up, quickly identifying Thompson as the younger brother of his longtime Warriors teammate, Klay Thompson. That changed his mind in a hurry, prompting Curry not only to stay but to record the entire at-bat on his phone, delightedly watching Thompson deliver a pinch-hit double down the left-field line. Thompson would score later in the inning, increasing the Dodgers’ lead to 9-3.
Though he wasn’t in the building Tuesday night, Klay attended a Dodgers game last month, cheering on his brother between vigorous sips of beer from his seat behind the first-base dugout.
After a disappointing stint with the Padres earlier this year (1-for-14 with seven strikeouts), Thompson has acclimated nicely to his new surroundings, batting a respectable .281 with four homers and 17 RBI as a Dodger (111 plate appearances). The 6’3” outfielder also played for the Dodgers from 2016-17.
