Dak Prescott, fairly or unfairly, might slowly be drifting into “injury-prone” territory.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback fractured his right thumb in Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’ll get surgery and is expected to be out at least six weeks.

He’s dealt with minor things here and there – like shoulder and calf strains last season – but the only other injury that forced him to miss games was the 2020 ankle fracture that ended his season.

Conversely, Prescott was on the injury report with an ankle ailment earlier in the week, and in the offseason got surgery on his non-throwing shoulder. The minor stuff is adding up, and it looks worse when he misses long chunks.

You can make a case either way, but Stephen Jones told the “K&C Masterpiece” on Monday that he doesn’t think Prescott is injury-prone.

“No, I think Dak is built to last,” Jones said. “Obviously, those hand injuries with quarterbacks in pockets are tough ones. I don’t think he’s injury-prone. I feel like he’ll rebound from this, he’s a great leader, he’ll be out there leading the charge. I know he won’t miss anything, and I think great things are ahead of Dak.”

Ultimately, it might be premature to give Prescott that injury-prone label. He played just five games in 2020 and will miss parts of this season, but his other five NFL campaigns he’s played in all 16 regular-season games, plus any playoff games. He’s had bad luck, for sure, but he’s repeatedly been available all season unless it’s a devastating injury.

Labels aside, losing Prescott is a brutal blow for a Cowboys team that already had question marks at offensive line and wide receiver.

Now, they can add quarterback to the list.
