Dan Campbell has been anything but bashful in his first season as Lions head coach. He's taking it up a notch in the season finale.
He's trick-playing the crap out of the Green Bay Packers.
It started early, and it actually didn't start well. Campbell called a fake punt at the end of Detroit's first drive, which failed when a perfectly-thrown ball by Jack Fox slipped through the hands of gunner Godwin Igwebuike.
Campbell wasn't deterred.
On the third play of the Lions' next drive, he dialed up maybe the prettiest play of the season, a fake pitch, double reverse that ended with recently-promoted practice squad receiver Tom Kennedy throwing a 75-yard TD to Kalif Raymond to tie the game at seven. It was Detroit's longest completion of the season and tied for its longest since 2015.
Campbell, who just might remain the Lions' play-caller next season, got fancy again early in the second half.
After Detroit recovered a fumble in Packers' territory, Campbell called for a shotgun handoff reverse flea-flicker (or something) that went from Jared Goff to Jamaal Williams to Amon-Ra St. Brown back to Goff and ended with Goff throwing a 36-yard touchdown to backup tight end Brock Wright to put the Lions up 24-13 on top team in the NFC -- which wasn't resting its starters, by the way.
It's been a long season in Detroit, albeit an encouraging one. No matter how Sunday's game ends, the offense will head into the offseason on a high.
