One of the most entertaining things about the Phoenix Suns is their energy and how lively every player can be whether they’re on the floor or bench.
Tim Legler thinks they went a little too far in Game 2.
As the Suns dropped the hammer on the Dallas Mavericks in the closing stages of Wednesday’s game, Phoenix didn’t dial back the energy. Even as their lead swelled well into the double digits, the dancing and strutting never ceased.
They ended up with a 129-109 win to take a 2-0 lead in the series as it shifts to Dallas. And while Legler says he thoroughly enjoys watching the Suns, he told JJ Redick on the "Old Man and the Three" podcast that they should have reeled it in.
"I just didn't like the overexaggerated -- I don't even mind all the talking, there's a lot of talking," Legler said. "It's clear that they're going at Luka (Doncic) so hard on defense and talking to him the whole game and they're trying to get in his head because they know he is the entire show and they're trying to do whatever they can and I'm totally cool with that, that's fine.
“I just felt like you guys are the No. 1 seed, you have the best record in the league, you lost in the finals last year. You have greater aspirations than winning a game against the Dallas Mavericks in the second round where you're getting all this strutting and posing. I don't know, to me -- and it's not going to affect the way I cover them or what I pick because I love their team, I love the way they play, I absolutely love it -- I just didn't like that.
“You're two games into this series, like alright man, just enough with that, it's a blowout, let's just win the game and get onto the next game. I just wasn't a fan of that."
Of course, the easy response is that if Dallas got more stops it would probably put an end to that.
And the Suns most certainly do have higher aspirations than just beating the Mavericks in the second round. But they've got to get through Dallas in order to reach their peak, and it's that way about them that guided the Suns to the NBA Finals last season and to the best record this year.
So, why stop now?
