Tony Romo is Making More Money Than Any of the Players in Game He Will Be Calling

History will be made in Foxboro Sunday.

Romo’s broadcast of the Patriots and Dolphins game kicks off a newly-signed contract that pays the former Cowboys quarterback more than $17 million a year. Going by base salaries, he will be the season opener’s highest-paid participant.

The Dolphins’ top-paid player is defensive back Byron Jones, who makes $11 million in 2020 after signing a 5-year, $82.5 million deal with Miami in the offseason. His teammate Xavien Howard does make $11.9 million this season, but doesn’t have the roster bonuses of his defensive backfield brethren.

Offensive lineman Joe Thuney is making $14,781,000 as a base salary for the Patriots this season, with cornerback Stephon Gilmore coming in at $10.5 million.

Only 18 players in the NFL have contracts with annual average values more than Romo.
