The New Orleans Saints did not play their best football in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, and that was punctuated with a play at the end of the half that could have sent them into the locker room all tied up.
With the Saints punting away down a touchdown, Chiefs returner DeMarcus Robinson attempted to run it back. Robinson was swarmed by Saints tacklers and tried to fend off each one when suddenly the ball was knocked loose and rolled into the end zone.
Saints linebacker Alex Anzalone jumped on the ball but could not secure it, letting a sure-fire touchdown slip away and trickle through the back of the end zone for a safety.
The play left everyone watching stunned, including Drew Brees, who triumphantly raised his hands thinking that the Saints just tied the game before dropping his hands onto the top of his helmet in disbelief.
Sure, the Saints still got two points out of it and entered halftime trialing 14-9 to the NFL-best Kansas City Chiefts, but had they recovered that fumble in the end zone it could have been a game-changer.
It remains to be seen if this will come back and haunt New Orleans, but social media was absolutely in awe of what they just witnessed.
That was incredibly bad by everyone involved.
