The Trey Lance hype train was in full swing on Saturday as the rookie quarterback made his preseason debut and wasted no time in impressing, tossing an 80-yard touchdown pass in just his second pass attempt of the game.
The third overall pick ran a play-action, faking the handoff before rolling to his left and firing a throw to wide receiver Trent Sherfield, who was wide open behind the secondary, and took it to the house.

The play is certainly what everyone wanted to see out of Lance, whom the Niners traded up to draft with the third overall pick, but he did not finish with the sexiest final stat line.
Lance finished 5-of-14 for 128 passing yards and a touchdown, although he was victim to some receiver drops, and was also sacked four times.
Following the game, head coach Kyle Shanahan cautioned that there is still plenty of work ahead for Lance as he tries to make his case to start over incumbent Jimmy Garoppolo.
“There was some good and some bad. By no means was it perfect,” Shanahan told reporters after the game. “There were a couple of spots that y9u’d like him to go to different places. Sometimes, a couple of balls that sailed on him that I think he’d like to have back. But he also came out pretty good too, making the right plays, getting in the right spots.
“We had a couple of drops there especially on a third down that he could have kept the drive going if we had caught it. But it was a good first day. I didn’t want it to go perfect for him. I’d like somethings that he could learn from. And there will be a lot of things that we can go over tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Garoppolo started the game with the first team, completing 3-of-3 pass attempts for 26 yards.
