James Corden almost went to The Shire before settling into late night.

“The Late Late Show” host recently guested on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and dropped some info on how he auditioned to play hobbit Samwise Gamgee in “Lord of the Rings.”

Corden told Horowitz most actors in London were looking to snag a roll in the trilogy of movies.

“Every single person in London auditioned for ‘Lord of the Rings.’ Everybody. I auditioned for Samwise. Was doing the accent and everything,” he said.

While Corden said he didn’t feel great about his audition he did get a call back.

“Two of my other friends went in [to audition] and then we all got called back the next day. Then none of us got called back after that,” he recalled.

The role of Samwise Gamgee went to “Rudy” star Sean Astin.
