They join seven other finalists including individuals and groups that most shaped this year’s headlines (good and bad). They are; the Hollywood strikers, Chinese President Xi Jinping, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the Trump prosecutors, Russian President Vladimir Putin, King Charles III, and Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell.
No surprise Swift made the list as she set out for world domination in 2023 and reached billionaire status. A major contributing factor was her record-breaking Eras Tour and accompanying concert film. Additionally, she re-released two of her most successful albums; 1989 and Speak Now. With all the success it’s hard to find a headline that doesn’t tie back to Swift in any way, shape, or form.
Barbie holds her own on the finalist list as a result of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. As the highest-grossing film of the year ($1.4 billion), another part of its mega-success was the all-star soundtrack featuring artists like Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, SZA, and more.
TIME's 2023 Person of the Year is set to be revealed on the morning of December 7.
