PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia broadcast journalism icon is signing off for the last time.
After delivering the good, the bad and the ugly to Philadelphians for 46 years, Jim Gardner gives his last newscast at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, over at WPVI-TV. After that: retirement.
Gardner began his broadcasting career in 1970 in New York City at KYW Newsradio’s sister station 1010 WINS. He came to Philadelphia in 1976 and began anchoring the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. television newscasts the following year.
Social media has been abuzz with tributes to Gardner. His final broadcast, to many, signifies the end of an era. Meanwhile, some fans are seeing him off with a bang at a tailgate Wednesday night in front of the WPVI studios on City Avenue.
