PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia International Airport is more than halfway finished installing a system that lets travelers know how long it will take them to get through TSA checkpoints. The new status screens are helping ease travelers’ anxieties.
Hugh Randall, who’s originally from Lansdowne, flies all over the world, so he appreciates the new flatscreens at PHL.
“If you look – just calm down and take your time. It’s very self-intuitive,” he said.
“So the more signage the better.”
The system uses sensors to gauge how fast the line moves and calculates how many minutes it’ll likely take to get through. The screens have just been installed at Terminals A-East and A-West. They’ve been up at the D/E checkpoint for about a year and half.
The airport’s public affairs manager, Heather Redfern, says surveys after the screens were installed show a double-digit jump in passengers who say the TSA lines went faster than expected.
“Especially during the busy times, the holidays, the day before Thanksgiving — people will come up and they’ll see this line stretched quite far. And they’ll think, ‘Oh, my gosh! It’s going to take an hour to get through security.’”
The wait times are also posted on the airport’s website. Redfern says terminals B, C and F should have the screens by next spring.
