Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Early Wednesday morning, contractors for the Department of General Services began putting concrete barriers around the Robert E. Lee Monument downtown. The barriers, according to DGS, are to protect protestors in the area, to proptect the monument, and to allow for the monument's removal, pending litigation.

Work on the barriers ended around 8am. While not tall, they would serve as a barrier if anyone tried to drive into a crowd at the monument. In Charlottesville in 2017, an activist was killed when a alt-right protestor drove into a crowd of people.
The monument is not far from where another Confederate monument was taken down overnight. The Horowitzer monument, at Park and Harrison, was taken down by protestors late Tuesday evening. All that remains is a pedestal.
