(RICHMOND, Va.) -- Around midday today, protesters gathered at the State Capitol in defiance of Governor Ralph Northam's stay-at-home order.
They protested the governor's two-week extension of the order closing businesses considered non-essential and limiting gatherings to ten people or fewer.
Capitol Police on scene reminded those who attended to maintain social distnacing and warned people who ignored those reminders that they could be cited for violating the governor's order. To keep the people inside Capitol Square to a minimum, some were left outside of the fence until enough people had left for them to come in.
Those who attended the protest say the governor doesn't have the authority to make people stay at home. Some said it's wrong that you're allowed to go to the grocery store but you can't go to work.
Northam extended the closing of non-essential businesses until May 8.
The protest was organized by Reopen Virginia, End the Lockdown VA and Virginians Against Excessive Quarantine.
