Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond Circuit Court Judge Riley Marchant says he wants to issue a "well-thought-out and well-reasoned" written decision regarding removal of the Robert E. Lee Monuement. As a result, the injunction against its removal remains in effect. No timeline was provided for when that opinion would be issued.
The State Attorney General is pushing to have the injunction withdrawn so the statue can be moved. Governor Ralph Northam announced his decision to move the monument in early June, after the early protests against police brutality occurred in Richmond.
The removal of the monument is being challenged by a descendant of the people who provided the land for the monument, saying removing it violates the 1890 deed of the land.
