(RICHMOND, Va.) -- AAA Mid-Atlantic says that the number of those 65 and older in Virginia that where hit and killed while crossing the street almost doubled in 2019.
According to preliminary numbers from the DMV, 37 senior pedestrians died as compared to 19 in 2018. The top factor that contributed to the deaths is not crossing at an intersection or crosswalk.
There were four senior pedestrian deaths in Henrico County, which is the second highest number in a locality in Virginia (Fairfax County had the most with six).
The most common times for seniors to be struck were between 6 and 9 p.m. and between 6 and 9 a.m. when it can be more difficult to see because of the angle of the sun or poor lighting.
