Black Lives Matter protesters vandalized and pushed over a statue in Madison, Wisconsin, of Col. Hans Christian Heg, a Norwegian immigrant who died fighting for the Union against slavery.
According to WKOW-TV, on Tuesday night, protesters pulled down a statue known as the Forward statue in front of the State Capitol, then turned their attention to the Heg statue.
Photos surfaced of the vandalism and destruction of the statue, one showing the phrase "BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL" spray-painted on the pedestal of the memorial.
The head was also removed from the statue and thrown into nearby Lake Monona.
In their effort to rip down whatever statue they could find, it seems the protesters failed to realize that not only did Heg fight and die for the Union, he was a Republican who served as the state prison commissioner and was a major advocate of vocational training for convicts to aid their rehabilitation, per the Wisconsin Historical Society.
