A California State University Sacramento professor has apologized after his wife used a racial slur on video during a confrontation with neighbors.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the video of associate economics professor Tim Ford and his wife, Crystal, was posted on May 1 by their neighbor, Mikaela Cobb and garnered thousands of views online.

The video shows Crystal Ford who appears to be drunk, arguing with Cobb and a man. The encounter reportedly started because Crystal Ford was upset about the smell of bacon grease.

Cobb appears to be filming from inside her apartment. Crystal Ford is heard using a racial slur, calls Cobb a "bitch" and flips off the camera.

Tim Ford says to the man, "I'm a professor at Sac State, dude. I have a Ph.D. I don't need to be dealing with s**t like this." He then tosses a liquid from the can he is holding and finally convinces his wife to leave with him.

In the days since the video was released, Sacramento State President Robert S. Nelsen issued a statement on Facebook condemning the Ford's actions, saying, "I am deeply offended by the language in the video. Racial epithets are repulsive and unacceptable. Personally, I am incredibly upset by the contents of the video and the harmful impact that it is having on our campus community."

Ford also issued an official apology through his lawyer on Friday after the school released its statement, the Bee reports. Ford said that "while we've had difficulties with this neighbor, this particular confrontation got out of hand. My wife used some language that was unacceptable and does not represent my way of thinking."

He added that "something like this will never happen again."

According to the school paper, the State Hornet, the Sacramento State Division of Inclusive Excellence also announced it will be holding a virtual town hall on May 19 on the topic of combating "racial bias."

The outlet also reports that a petition from a Sac State student entitled, #FireTimFord, began circulating Friday morning and has received over 1,100 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon.
