Dr. Anthony Fauci is changing his tune on coronavirus as he now says that a second wave of the virus may never happen and that wearing a mask is more of a symbolic action at this point.

During an interview Wednesday on CNN's "Newsroom," Fauci said that a second wave of the coronavirus - which has been feared by many - is not necessarily guaranteed to happen.

"We often talk about the the possibility of a second wave, or of an outbreak when you're reopening," Fauci said. "We don't have to accept that as an inevitability."

Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, specifically referred to the fall, which has been discussed as a possible window for the virus to return and reinforced the idea that this is not "inevitable."

He also added that while Americans should wear face masks to protect themselves and others, the masks are not totally effective and are more a sign of "respect" for others.

"I want to protect myself and protect others, and also because I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that that's the kind of thing you should be doing," he said.
