Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced on Wednesday that the city would cut up to $150 million in funding from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and redirect those funds to the local African-American community.
Garcetti said, "This is bigger than just a budget, but I want you to know we will not be increasing our police budget - how can we at this moment?"
The Democratic mayor added that he had worked with city members and community leaders "to commit to reinvesting in black communities, and communities of color; in those places left behind."
He also said it was up to the city "to step up and say: What can we sacrifice?"
