Canadian Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault said that news websites and social media companies may soon be required to obtain a government license to operate in Canada, CTV reports.
Guilbeault has been asked to update Canada's broadcasting laws and stated that all internet news sites will be "asked" to get a government-approved license. His report, entitled, "Canada’s communications future: Time to act," was released on Jan. 29 and stipulates that the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will be expanded not just to regulate television and radio, but also news websites.
