In response to pressure from protests over the death of George Floyd, members of the Minneapolis City Council announced on Sunday that they intend to defund and dismantle the city's police department.
CNN reports that nine of the council's 13 members have committed to voting for the dismantling of the police department, which would give the group a supermajority, making the decision safe from veto.
Council President Lisa Bender told the outlet, "We committed to dismantling policing as we know it in the city of Minneapolis and to rebuild with our community a new model of public safety that actually keeps our community safe."
