Several high-ranking Virginia Republicans have called on Gov. Ralph Northam (D) for a moratorium on early releases for criminals who have committed violent crimes, after the parole board's decision to release a convicted cop killer was met with outrage.
House Minority Leader C. Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) and Senate Minority Leader Thomas K. Norment, Jr. (R-James City) released a joint statement on Tuesday along with Del. Robert B. Bell (R-Albemarle) and Sen. Mark D. Obenshain (R-Rockingham) asking for the governor to stop the early release of prisoners with violent convictions.
However, Northam spokeswoman Alena Yarmosky told ABC 8News in a statement that Northam would be denying the request.
