A resolution that would redirect funds from the Richmond Police Department (RPD) to other city departments, as well as mental health, social services and substance abuse programs is moving forward in the Richmond City Council, 8News reports.
The resolution - introduced by councilmembers Stephanie Lynch and Michael Jones - asks RPD to find activities performed by the department "that relate to mental health, substance abuse and such other activities that do not directly relate to the law enforcement aspects of police work."
Lynch and Jones are looking to take funds from the police department and divert them to community programs for mental health, addiction and high-risk minors.
More than 20 people spoke during a public comment period of the committee on Thursday night.
RPD Chief Gerald Smith also spoke during the committee, defending his department and stating that while he understands community concerns, defunding police is not the answer.
The resolution will be brought before the full council on July 27.
