Gov. Ralph Northam issued an order on Monday for Virginia residents to stay home until June 10 to help contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Northam said, "I want to be clear: Do not go out unless you need to go out. This is very different than wanting to go out."
He added that some of Virginia's beaches and other outdoor recreational areas were "packed" over the weekend, and that people gathering in those crowds are "putting themselves and others at risk."
The order went into effect immediately and will last through June 10. Violators may be subject to up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
