Syria, Va. (Newradiowrva.com) - The State Forestry Department says a fire near Syria, in Madison County, has burned 125 acres and in only ten percent contained. The fire is near the Shenandoah National Park. Syria is basically midway in between Culpeper and Harrisonburg.
Spokesman Greg Bilyeu says firefighters have not determined a cause. The fire is on steep and rocky terrain, which makes it more difficult to fight. It also has been dry in western Virginia, and fallen leaves have added to the fuel.
Smoke can be seen in several counties. No structures or homes are at risk.
