Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Senate Education and Health Committee has rejected a post-20 week ban on abortions in the Commonwealth. The vote was along party lines, and comes after the House of Delegates pulled their ban bill, saying it would not pass the Senate.
Senator Siobhan Dunnavant (R-Henrico) says public polling shows little support for third trimester abortions. The third trimester begins at 24 weeks. Dunnavant is an OB/GYN. However, Senator Ghzala Hashmi (D-Chesterfield) says woman having an abortion at that time are often having it for medical reasons, and are doing so after deep discussions.
The bill was originally sponsored by Senator Amanda Chase (R-Chesterfield).
