Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Ahead of what could be Virginia’s first winter storm of the season, AAA is reminding drivers to keep safety top of mind when driving in snow or ice this winter.
AAA says winter storms, bad weather, and sloppy weather conditions contribute to nearly half a million crashes and more than 2,000 road deaths each year.
When road conditions are snowy or icy, AAA recommends doing the following to account for lower traction:
• Taking it slow. Reduce your speed and slow your steering. Accelerate and brake more slowly.
• Leave space. Keep a huge “donut” of space around your vehicle.
• Don’t use cruise control. Avoid relying on your vehicle’s driver aids like cruise control while the roads are wet or icy
Before a storm hits, drivers can prepare by checking their battery and tire pressure and making sure they have an emergency kit in their car. The emergency kit should include items like non perishable food products, water, a blanket, and a phone charger.
This Saturday, meteorologists say a winter storm is set to impact the region. The majority of Central Virginia is likely to see cold rain, but northwestern counties of the region (Prince Edward northward to Orange counties) may see a wintry mix occur.
