Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - AAA says this summer travel season is looking to be one of the busiest in years. Bookings for hotels and car rentals are up nearly 30% compared to this time last year.

Higher numbers of airline travelers are also expected; TSA data shows an increase of more than 12% in the number of flyers over the 2023 Memorial Day weekend compared to last year. Due to higher demand, plane tickets to some of the most popular destinations will be up almost 40%.

AAA spokesperson Morgan Dean says people planning on embarking on a road trip this summer can save money and avoid mishaps by getting routine maintenance and ensuring their car's tires are properly inflated.

"Running with tires underinflated actually burns more gas so you end up paying more per gallon, and nobody wants that," Dean says. "Check the wipers, check the fluid, check the oil, check the battery, and make sure you're ready to go for your trip."
