Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) Nationally, gas prices at the pump are continuing to rise, even faster than expected. According to AAA, the prices are increasing as a result of the war in Ukraine, economies reopening after covid and an increased need for oil due to Spring break.

Last week, AAA's mid Atlantic spokesperson, Morgan Dean, predicted that the national average would reach $4 by St. Patrick's Day. With the holiday still being ten days away, the national average is already at $4.06. Virginia's state average is $3.98 and Richmond is just one cent behind that. Gas prices have jumped up 55 cents in just the past week.

Dean said that the last time gas prices were this high was 14 years ago, in July of 2008. Then, the economy was facing uncertainty during the Great Recession, now the war in Ukraine. News outlets have reported that the Biden administration may ban all Russian oil from the United States. Dean said that if they go through with this then prices will continue to rise. He also gave us tips for saving on gas which include consolidating trips, checking filters, fluid and tire pressure, along with carpooling.
