Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Abortion rights groups will gather at the State Capitol Wednesday morning, concerned there could be a vote on abortion restrictions. Lawmakers will be in Richmond for a session to deal with a State Corporation Commission judgeship.
However, the groups are concerned Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) could send down a bill containing abortion restrictions. The Governor's office says they have no plans to do so, and point out that when they put out a statement on the Dobbs decision (which overturned Roe v. Wade), the Governor focused on when the General Assembly returns in January.
The Senate is controlled by Democrats, but abortion restrictions have been defeated in committee, not the Senate floor. If a bill went straight to the Senate floor, Senator Joe Morrissey (D-Petersburg) could side with Republicans, which would then give Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears (R) the tie-breaking vote.
