Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond Police say they will have additional officers around George Wythe High School, after the weekend arrest of the alleged shooter in the school parking lot last week. On Saturday, officers, along with U.S. Marshalls, arrested David Gutierrez, 18, of Richmond. Gutierrez is enrolled at Wythe, and now faces two counts of attempted murder and two counts of use of a firearm.
The shooting in the parking lot wounded two other Wythe students. One has life-threatening injuries. No shots were fired inside the school, and police have not provided a motive.
In addition to more officers, interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards says the department is holding a "Vigil for Peace" hosted by the Richmond Police Chaplains Team, Virginia's in Action, and other community members. "This is a call to action,” Interim Chief Edwards said in a statement. “Gun violence must be stopped, and it will take all of us working together to keep our City safe." The vigil will be held at the Belt Atlantic Apartments, located at 4000 Midlothian Turnpike, across the street from the high school. This is the location of a recent homicide in the City.
