Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) has informed lawmakers there is an additional $1.25 billion in revenue for the Commonwealth. This comes on top of additional revenue that was announced by former Governor Ralph Northam (D) in December.
Youngkin, not surprisingly, is saying the additional money gives support to his calls for tax relief. Youngkin ran, in part, on a platform of tax cuts. His proposals, which include doubling the standard deduction and repealing the gas tax increase for a year, have met with varying levels of success. The Republican-controlled House has backed his plan while the Democratically-controlled Senate has either changed or killed portions.
Youngkin says there is enough unanticipated revenue in the budget to both provide tax relief and make investments in education, law enforcement, and other priorities.
