Newport News, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Newport News Police say they have arrested an 18-year old Warwick High School student, accusing him of shooting and killing a 17-year old in a high school parking lot following the Menchville/Woodside basketball game. Police have charged Demari Batten with murder, use of a firearm, and use of a firearm on school grounds, in the death of 17-year old Justice Dunham.
Police Chief Steve Drew says they believe the two young men argued during the game. He also says they have video evidence of some of the disagreements.
Drew also says they recovered three guns at the scene: the one they accuse Batten of using, as well as two they say were in Dunham's car. Newport News Mayor McKinley Price says he blames the shooting, in part, on easy access to firearms.
