Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Harry Byrd statue no longer stands at a prominent place on Capitol Square. The state of the former Governor and longtime U.S. Senator was removed Wednesday morning, after the General Assembly approved its removal this past session.
Byrd was one of the largest figures in 20th Century Virginia, running an organization that controlled the Commonwealth for decades. He was also the power behind Massive Resistance, which as the policy that opposed school integration.
The Byrd Statue used to stand in the northwest corner of the Square, and passed by lawmakers daily as they went from the old General Assembly Building to the Capitol itself.
